2. Mission Awareness Week ~ Jan. 10-14, 2011

Mission Parish School students will participate in a week-long program entitled "Come and See!" provided by the Columban Mission Educaton Program. The students and teachers are about to go on a missionary journey and, like the early disciples, want to know where Jesus lives. Jesus has given us an open invitation to "come and see!"
This journey will take our students to different lands where they will experience the customs and faith expressions of our brothers and sisters in their search for God. Each grade level will discover a different part of the world and learn how we can all become Globally Aware Citizens, as stated in our Schoolwide Learning Expectations.
- Why take this journey? We take this journey because it is an act of faith. Finding Jesus in our brothers and sisters around the globe is what Christianity is all about.
- Why educate for mission? We educate for mission because Jesus taught us to be missionaries. Jesus was the first and primary missionary of God. He was sent to bring us the Good News of God's unconditional love, to tell us that God is constantly among us, and to tell us we are called to be missionaries - to spread the good news of God's love wherever we are.
Jesus said, "As the Father sent me, so I send you." (John 20:21)
- Why use the "Come and See!" program? This program will help both students and teachers:
- To awaken an appreciation of the relationship between different nations.
- To share the pains and the struggles of the developing nations of the word and to learn how the Church is responding to these situations.
- To celebrate the multi-cultural richness of our Church.

Dear Jesus,
When You first said
"Come and See,"
the disciples left home
to follow You.
As they walked with You,
You shared with them
the Good News of
God's ways.
And now
You invite us
to find God's ways
in other peoples and lands.
Send us Your Spirit,
and we will listen
and answer Your call
to "Come and See."

3. Haiti Club
New to Mission Parish School during the 2006-07 school year was the creation and development of the Haiti Club. This club is part of our Outreach Program. Its focus is to help expand globally aware citizens in our school community while developing philanthropic hearts by the way of fundraising and fellowship. Two years ago, a check in the amount of $2,300.00 was presented to Connie Basso to give to Powje Espwa (Project Hope). It will be used to purchase much needed milking cows and baby chicks. The top 5 classes which produced the most money during our Lenten ‘caring and sharing’ venture were awarded by naming the cows. They are as follows:
1st Grade ~ “Spotty”
2nd Grade ~ “Milky Way”
3rd ~ “Oreo”
4th Grade ~ “Moo Moo”
8th Grade ~ “Milkshake”
Great Job everyone!!
Last year, the students worked to collect money to buy shoes and socks for all the children in the Powje Espwa orphanage.

4. Living Stations of the Cross

Each Lenten season, the eighth grade students re-enact the Living Stations of the Cross for the school and the parish community.
5. Hurricane Katrina Relief
The students of Mission Parish School contributed over $9,000 to Catholic Charities for the Hurricane Katrina Rebuild and Recovery fund.
